Three-Goal Second Period Lifts Wolves Past Monsters

ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves erased a 1-0 first-intermission deficit with three goals in the second period to earn a 3-1 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters in front of a season-high 15,319 fans Saturday night at the Allstate Arena.

Forwards Darren Haydar (G, 2A) and Steve Reinprecht (G, A) and defenseman Chris Tanev (2A) paced the offense for Chicago, which won for the sixth time at home in seven contests.

“We started slow, but I was happy we were only down one after the first period,” said Wolves head coach Craig MacTavish. “It was a good step for our team to turn it around in the second and hold on for the victory.”

Trailing 1-0 after 20 minutes, Chicago (18-12-1-3) knotted the score 6:42 into the second period. Left wing Bill Sweatt controlled the puck below the goal line, stick-handled into the near circle and wristed a shot past screened Lake Erie goaltender Trevor Cann.

The Wolves jumped ahead 2-1 on the power play when right wing Mark Mancari’s shot from the side of the crease hit the far post and landed at the skates of Reinprecht, who flipped the puck under the bar and into the empty net at 9:26.

Chicago opened a 3-1 advantage 2:44 later. Seconds after a Wolves power play expired, Haydar controlled the puck in the far circle and sent a shot between the legs of Cann. The netminder got a piece of it, but the puck trickled over the goal line at 9:26.

Cann (8-13-0) stopped 18 of 21 shots.

Lake Erie (16-18-1-1) picked up its lone goal 43 seconds after the opening face-off. Left wing Patrick Rissmiller’s shot hit off the back-boards and the puck bounced to center Evan Brophey at the side of the net. He tapped home the puck past Wolves goaltender Matt Climie.

Climie (10-5-0) posted 19 saves.

The Wolves close out a three-in-three weekend when they host the Charlotte Checkers at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Allstate Arena.
